Farah Rug. Bazaar Velvet of London have created a new collection called “Afghan Moon” this is a partnership where they are committed to helping women weavers of Afghanistan re-enter the workplace. Traditional Afghan cultural practices, as well as more recent restrictions affecting women’s ability to travel, study and work, have meant that many women have taken up the art of carpet weaving in their homes. These women have taken on this ancient skill that helps with isolation and offers support to their families who desperately needed incomes at this time of economic crisis in Afghanistan. Afghan carpets have a long and rich history. The art of carpet making in Afghanistan is thought to date back to the 16th century, when the Afghan people began to use carpets as a form of decoration and to keep their homes warm during the cold winter months. These carpets are made with Ghazni wool possibly the best in the world from their mountain goats and hand spinning the wool gives a beautiful silky sheen and creates stunning quality rugs full of character and charm. No one colour is solid as the wool is twisted together before dying creating variation in each shade. Designs take on an organic form where nothing repeats or has any symmetry, inspiration comes from a nod to the Bauhaus movement in the early 1900’s however these designs are much less structured. Each piece is Step labelled a wonderful charity organization improving the wellbeing of weavers and workers and promoting Fair Trade Standards.
